Our department has 8 registrar/fellow positions. We generally employ 2-3 international fellows. One of the units has a sub specialty interest in surgical oncology though all units are involved in general paediatric surgery and participate on the on-call roster.
Duration of Programme: 12 months. Positions usually run from August-August but are negotiable.
Hands-on? Yes. International fellows working in the department have the same roles, responsibilities and access to cases as local trainees with significant operative opportunities.
Brief description of Programme (Limit 250 words)
The Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) provides secondary and tertiary care to children and young people of Melbourne; specialist paediatric healthcare to the children of Victoria, Tasmania, southern NSW and parts of South Australia; and is the designated statewide provider of services including paediatric trauma, rehabilitation and forensic medicine. As a quaternary centre for complex cardiac surgery and transplantation, the RCH cares for the sickest children from around Australia. Our senior registrars and fellows are directly involved in paediatric surgical care and have the opportunity to be involved in a range of paediatric surgical specialities including trauma, burns, urology, hepatobiliary, neonatal, oncology, colorectal and thoracic surgery appropriate to their experience. The majority of paediatric oncology care is managed at RCH and a full range of experience in surgical oncology is available. Working within one of the busiest paediatric surgical services in Australasia, the role is a demanding one but provides great exposure to a wide variety of paediatric surgical conditions and an opportunity to greatly enhance one’s surgical training. This is a great platform for future paediatric surgeons.
