This is a 6-month surgical oncology attachment that includes full involvement of the post-holder in the management of surgical oncology patients including attending oncology board meetings.
We see approximately 10% of all paediatric oncology solid tumours in England and undertake more than 50 major resections via open or minimally invasive surgery per year.
We undertake resection of all intra-thoracic and intra-abdominal solid tumour types (except liver, although experience in this can be arranged) along with lymph node and USS guided, minimally invasive and open biopsies. We also perform testicular and minimally invasive oophorectomy for cryopreservation.
Minimally invasive surgery is employed for significant numbers of resections including rhabdomyosarcoma, renal tumours, neuroblastoma and pulmonary metastases via laparoscopic trans-and retroperitoneal or thoracoscopic approaches where appropriate. We use indo-cyanine green fluorescent guided surgery and have a number of clinical trials in set-up or running, along with integration of ICG into routine practice.
The post-holder will also be involved in our dedicated USS guided lines service which places around 300 tunneled central lines and totally implantable venous access devices per year. This routinely includes babies under 1kg.
The post-holder will be expected to participate in the on-call emergency rota managing paediatric general surgery patients.
The two surgical oncology consultants are involved in national and international oncology groups and have major interests in germ cell (Suren Arul) and renal (Max Pachl) tumours. Mr Pachl also has a major research interest in fluorescent guided surgery with support from the Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit which has a global reputation.
